In the United Kingdom the collective findings of the carbon footprints of 1964 dairy farms that supply their milk to Arla UK show that they produce milk with 1.13 kilogram CO2equivalent per kilogram milk. To compare: according to the FAO globally the average is 2.5 kilogram CO2equivalents per kilogram milk and in the UK according to the National Farmers Union the average is 1.25 kilogram. According to Arla raw milk emissions come from six key areas on farm: cow digestion (46%); cow feed (where and how it is produced) (37%); manure handling (9%); energy production and usage (5%); emissions from peat soils (1%); all other areas grouped together (2%).
