In Austria, from mid-2023, mentioning the origin of milk, meat and eggs in mass catering will be mandatory. As a first step, the mandatory labelling of origin should apply to communal catering, for example in hospitals, retirement and nursing homes, schools, company canteens and privately run canteens in companies. There are around 2.2 million meals consumed every day. Voluntary labelling in gastronomy must also be proven in the future. A total of around 3.5 million meals are eaten outside the home every day in Austria. Labelling on processed foods will follow in a second step.
