Great Britain: Müller dairy launches programme to support farmers

In the United Kingdom the Germany headquartered private dairy Müller has launched a new program to provide dairy farmers with tools and support to help further improve supply chain collaboration, herd health and reductions in environmental impact. This Müller Advantage program aims to help up to 600 dairy farms that supply direct to Müller with managing and further reducing the use of antibiotics, sustainable sourcing of animal feed, reductions in energy and water use, recycling and enhancing biodiversity. Participation will be incentivised with an opportunity to earn an additional payment of 1.0 pence (1.1 eurocent) per litre in 2021. In Great Britain 600 dairy farms supply direct to Müller milk from another 1000 farms is delivered through other companies.

Ireland: Carbery Group finishes new production plant

The Irish dairy cooperative Carbery Group has finished a new cheese production plant for mozarella and grilling cheese. The new plant required an investment of 78 million euro. The aim of Carbery is to export the cheese to European countries and to existing and new markets in Asia. Carbery produces 55000 tons of cheese per year which is 25 percent of the Irish national cheese production. The aim is to increase the production with 640000 tons per year.

Ireland: Brexit – impact on milk price

Irish dairy farms will in 2021 have a margin per hectare of 1000 euro which is 23 percent less than in 2020. The loss will be caused by Brexit and corona, predicts Teagasc, the Irish national agency which is providing research, advisory and education in agriculture. Teagasc states that when because of Brexit Ireland can export less dairy products to Great Britain milk price in Ireland will drop seven percent.

Ireland: Aurivo offers fixed milk price

In Ireland the second biggest dairy cooperative Aurivo offers its members a fixed milk price for three years (2021, 2022, 2023) of 32.5 eurocent per litre with 3.6 percent fat and 3.3 percent protein. For the average real percentage of fat and protein this will mean 37.28 eurocent per litre. Members can fix their price for a maximum volume of 15 percent of their milk supply in 2020. Aurivo has around 1000 milk suppliers supplying nearly 500 million litres of milk per year.

Sweden: dairy data – year 2019-2020

In Sweden in the recording year 2019-2020 the average milk production of recorded dairy cows was 10232 kilogram of milk and 10679 kilogram ECM per cow. (ECM = energy-corrected milk, ie taking into account the fat and protein content.) The increase is 236 kilogram of milk and 262 kilogram of ECM, respectively. A Swedish herd that join milk recording delivers approximately 600 kilogram more milk per cow and year than other herds.

Finland: climate change influences dairy consume

In Finland seven percent of the consumers say that they will totally stop consuming milk products because of climate change, 20 percent are considering that and 73 percent are sure that they will not stop consuming dairy products. Also 30 percent of the consumers are already buying less dairy products and other 30 percent could consider to buy less than before. However: 40 percent are sure that climate change will not influence to their shopping of milk products. This was found out in research of Vaasan/IROResearch&Consulting.

France: European Court decision regarding „country of origin of milk“ on packaging

The European Court has decided that France is not allowed to oblige dairies to write the country of origin of milk on the packing. According to the European Court this obligation is only allowed when there is a clear relation between the country of origin and the quality of the milk.

France: Danone sells its stake in Yakult

The France headquartered private dairy Danone has finalized the sale of its 6.61 percent stake in Yakult Honsha Co. Ltd. Yakult is a global leader in probiotics, headquartered and listed in Japan. The transaction resulted in a total gross consideration of JPY58 billion, representing 470 million euro. Danone’s collaboration with Yakult began in 2004. In 2018 Danone divested most of its 21.29 percent stake in the company.

Italy: cow produced more than 200 000 kilogram milk

Italy had its first cow that produced more than 200 000 kilogram milk. The black and white Holstein Friesian Ronchi Lee Lea. She produced in 4503 days 203600 kilogram milk with 3.44 percent fat and 3.22 percent protein. Last time she calved was 3.5 years ago. In this eight’ lactation she produced more than 40 000 kilogram milk.

Germany: ife-data September

In Germany in September compared to August the raw material or compound value of milk at farm increased 1.2 eurocent to 31.1 eurocent per kilogram milk with 4.0 percent fat and 3.4 percent protein (exclusive VAT). This is 0.3 eurocent less than in the same month last year. The highest future price of milk for the next 18 months on the Kieler Börsenmilchwert European Energy Exchange is the price for April 2022 at 33.2 eurocent. The lowest future price is the price for October 2020 at 31.4 eurocent.

Germany: DMK fixes milk price

In Germany, after a pilot last year, now starting November member farms of the biggest German dairy cooperative DMK can fix the future milk price of 30 percent of their monthly production volume. DMK will offer a fix price for the next twelve months. Farms can fix their price for this period for a maximum volume of 30 percent of their production.

Belgium: Milcobel closes production line in Schoten

The Belgian biggest dairy cooperative Milcobel will stop the production of dairy drinks on its site in the town of Schoten. This because the production line in Schoten is not up to date anymore and Milcobel is losing money with dairy drinks. The measure is in line with restructure program to save in 2020 five percent on fixed costs. With the closure 167 employees are losing their job.

The Netherlands: RFC „On the Way to PlantProof“

In Holland the dairy cooperative Royal FrieslandCampina will offer milk that is produced under the conditions of On the Way to PlanetProof‘ directly from the farm to other dairies. In this way RFC is responding to the increasing market demand for milk that meets strict requirements for animals, nature and climate, RFC states. RFC does current not have space for more Planet Proof milk from member farms. However: RFC its member dairy farmers have growing interest to produce more sustainable milk. Starting in 2018, current more than 600 members are participating under the independent ‚On the Way to PlanetProof‘ label. Dairy farmers who supply milk under the label receive an extra payment for their milk.
